Why is it important to report a near miss?
The Near-miss Book helps employers and employees record details of less severe workplace accidents. However, near misses should not be treated lightly. They can provide valuable insight into how well health and safety is being managed in your business.
It can act as an early warning system and reveal a pattern of behaviour or potential hazards that, if not addressed, could result in a more serious accident taking place down the line.
It makes good business sense to be proactive and take action early on when problems are less likely to be serious.
Near misses may seem trivial at first glance but they are a valuable source of information. Taking the time to investigate the underlying causes carefully is likely to:
reduce risk
improve health and safety
and save you time and money

Accident Reporting
IDM will ensure your business and workforce are protected from the legal consequences of an accident or dangerous occurrence at work by ensuring all incidents are reported and that the relevant authorities are notified as soon as possible.
Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR)
RIDDOR is the law that requires employers, and other people in charge of work premises, to report and keep records of:
- work-related accidents which cause deaths
- work-related accidents which cause certain serious injuries (reportable injuries)
- diagnosed cases of certain industrial diseases; and
- certain ‘dangerous occurrences’ (incidents with the potential to cause harm)
